Side Trips

Filed under: — Little Brother @ 5:52 am

While it was difficult to pull myself away from the forest and beach of Lake Huron the girls and I did have a couple entertaining side trips while camping. We spent one afternoon playing at the Ocqueoc river and falls, the only falls in the Lower Peninsula (yes, the LP of Michigan is flat). They also enjoyed visiting Alpena on one of the cooler afternoons where they rode go-karts, bumper boats and played putt-putt golf.

Camping

The girls and I had a great time camping on Lake Huron at Hoeft State Park. All five families camped this year (10 adults, 12 kids) which made for a lot of fun and fellowship. I love sitting around a campfire with 20 people. It reminds me of family camp. The weather was at times hot for swimming and sunbathing and cool for hiking, biking and campfires. Of course, Lake Huron was just amazing and inspiring to watch, listen and enjoy.

Fire hats, that is. Ones that say “San Jose Fire Department” on them! They offered, he accepted. Lucky San Jose!

Six weeks later …

Eggs are finally rolling out the spiffy rear roll-out nest boxes and chickens are sleeping on their new roosts. Flowers bloom in the planter box and (most of) the trim is on. In a couple more weeks maybe we’ll even have the tools all put away!

The “Tina Rowena Poopalot Memorial Chicken Coop”
(so named to honor the very special tiny chicken who was taken by a predator in the night through a rotted board in the old coop) features the following improvements:

  • predator-safe, inside and out
  • clean, unbroken eggs roll out of the nest
  • no chicken poop in the screened “people side”
  • automatic waterer
  • rodent-proof (resistant?)
  • “poop chute” opens into the compost bin
  • solar light
  • covered yard that’s “bunny-safe” too … bunnies coming soon!
